Cops lead the arrested zama zamas to the vans.
MORE than 20 zama zamas were rescued from an underground death by Gauteng police and mine rescue workers yesterday afternoon.
The men were found inside what seems to be a hole leading to a mine shaft at the Rugby Club in Florida, West of Joburg.
Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the arrested zama zamas will remain behind bars.
She said they will be charged with illegal mining and trespassing.
“One of the miners sustained severe head injuries.  “He was taken to hospital and is under police guard,” she said.
Kweza said they were investigating the possibility that a gang of five men who were holding other zama zamas hostage underground.
“There is a 33-year-old- man who sustained stab wounds on his back. A team of four people has gone underground to investigate,” she said.
Zama zamas at the scene claimed some police officials were involved in selling what the illegal miners managed to retrieve underground.
Colonel Kweza told the People’s Paper that police found some dangerous mining equipment.
The scene is closely monitored by the cops.
